Native regeneration

Evan has been doing some research at the Barossa Bushgardens, in preparation for the next phase of our planned native plantings. Since 2014, we have planted 3000 native plants around the Stonewell property as part of our commitment to improving the biodiversity of our region and our action to improve the environment This year, we plan to plant another 700-1000 trees, shrubs, bushes, reeds and grasses that are all native to the Barossa.

At the Cottages

There has been a lot of native planting happening at the cottages with Evan and his team planting 1150 Barossa native trees, shrubs, bushes and reeds around the property to help our continuous improvement of the bio diversity of the Stonewell Vineyards and Cottage grounds. In total this will take the native plantings to 4150 Barossa natives over the last 5 years. Giving back to our natural environment is important to us here at Stonewell.

Introducing our new soup and dessert maker – Barossa Street Food. Emily, Ash and Nathan now supply us with the most delicious smoked hock, lentil vegetable soup, or, curried vegetable lentil soup, served with a crusty roll. For dessert, scrumptious sticky date pudding with caramel sauce and Jersey Fresh cream.  You can add this in-room meal to your booking by placing an order through our website. It’s a great way to start your stay, just settle in, stoke up the fire, pour a glass of red, no need to go anywhere. This meal is also included in our Winter Warmer Package which runs until the end of August.

Winter in the Vineyard

We have been lucky so far and Jack Frost has only made a minor appearance, we have also had some winter rains which the subsoil desperately needed, however, we will definitely say a big “YES” to more rain!  Although everything looks green, looks can be deceiving as that is not necessarily an indicator that there isn’t a drought. To produce good crops we need good subsoil moisture. The rainfall for June was 53 mm and the long term average is 57 so we are pretty much on target. The way that rain fell came in two heavy falls which gave the ground a really good soaking. All the waterways on our property are mowed and kept clear to allow the free flow of water to the dams.

Pruning is making good progress with approximately 40% of the vines pruned. Dan and his team will be kept busy for the rest of July as they move through all 28 hectares, pruning each vine, a highly skilled and important job as it sets the vine up for bearing fruit for the next vintage.
