What’s on this weekend

Here we are, the weekend of the winter solstice, does that mean I now have to start planning for Christmas??
There are some great events on this weekend……..
Lambert Estate Wines have ‘Fireside Friday” kicking off from 5 pm with acoustic music, a great fire, delicious food and of course – wine.
To celebrate the shortest day of the year from Fri through to Sunday, 11 am – 4 pm, Elderton Wines cellar door team will be venturing down to the Ashmead Family Cellar to select a special wine to be opened for your enjoyment. Paired with a plate of local cheeses from Barossa Cheese, you will be able to settle in by the open fire, or at the long table in the “Smoke room” and enjoy a glass of wine that has been carefully aged in optimum cellaring conditions.
On Friday El Estanco Greenock have their fortnightly pizza night, flavorsome food and great beverages.
Saturday night if you are after something a little different, book into Red Art – Rojomoma for their launch of their Amplify Shiraz. This rustic little cellar door is hosting a 3 course dinner accompanied with wines and a string quartet. A great way to celebrate the solstice!! Bookings essential
Have a great weekend!!

Fireside dining

Winter in the Barossa, we love a good fire, warming and mesmerizing at the same time. Here are our top picks of places to dine that have a wood fire where you can relax and soak up the ambiance with a good Barossa red and some tasty regional food.

Favourite restaurant with best open fire has to be Vintners Barossa. It’s been our personal pick for years for all our special occasions. Consistently good food and service.

Favourite cafe El Estanco Greenock A character filled little place with Julian’s heritage and love of traditional Colombian cuisine ensures there is always something super tasty on his daily menu.

Favourite local pub The Greenock Really popular with the locals, you are guaranteed of good pub fare with some great daily specials. Chris and his family offer friendly service with good old country pub atmosphere.

Other great restaurants all with cosy fires we recommend you visit when in the Barossa are 1918 Bistro & GrillFINO SeppeltsfieldHentley Farm and Appellation at The Louise.

There you go! Just a few to get you started! Too many choices to fit into just a day trip! Why not escape to the Barossa for a few cosy nights. Check out our newly released winter specials www.stonewellcottages.com.au/specials/

Rain!!

It’s been almost 2 years since we’ve seen water flowing into our irrigation dams! Last night, we welcomed 34mm of much needed rainfall. A happy day here!

Winter rain is critical for our vineyards. It is needed to fill the soil profile with moisture, down to a depth of 1 – 1.2m so that when the vines begin to come out of dormancy in early spring, they can grow new shoots vigorously. Insufficient winter rain can mean the vines may sense dry conditions in early spring, which can have a negative effect on crop levels. If we have average winter rainfall, the vines will generally crop well, and will continue to utilise the stored moisture in the soil throughout spring, minimising the necessity to irrigate until summer. Early winter rain is also important to saturate the soil profile, so that further rainfall in July and August will flow to our irrigation dams. This provides us with the irrigation water, required for the vineyards through summer. Good winter rain is also great for our broad acre farmers. No rain = no food!
